About Uppingham

Uppingham is a small town in what used to be called Rutland. It was just a tiny county, yet it encompassed some of the most beautiful countryside in England. A change of name did nothing to diminish its beauty.

Long shadows are cast by the spire of the church of St.Peter and St.Paul, built in Anglo-Saxon times, the church occupies a prominent position off the old market-place, and is surrounded by other pleasing historic buildings.

The county has long been famed for its excellent hunting and for its great cheese, red Leicester being one of Britain's best loved native varieties.

A short distance away lies Bede House at Lyddington, which until the reformation was the home of the Bishops of Lincoln. The interesting village of Seaton is also within easy driving distance. This is where you can see the Welland Viaduct, which at about a mile in length is the longest of its kind in England.
