About Grinshill

The picturesque village of Grinshill is spread beneath Grinshill Hill, an isolated rocky outcrop which rises above the plains of the Severn Valley. As you look down upon the valley you dwell upon a glorious patchwork of fields, hedges, rich pastureland, ancient trees, buildings huddled together or interspersed across the plain and in the far distance are the mountainous hills of Wales. It is the stuff of a Constable painting.

The narrow lane that runs the length of Grinshill is lined with lovely houses. The village has a manicured, well cared for air about it that tells you that this is a prosperous little place. Overlooking the cricket field is an impressive property. It is the Jacobean Stone Grange, built in 1617 as aretreat for teachers and pupils from nearby Shrewsbury School. The house was widely used whenever the plague struck Shrewsbury.

In a lane away from the village is the hansome red sandstone church of All Saints, built towards the middle of the 19th-century. It has a narrow west tower and a projecting parapet of Italian style. The interior is pure serenity and contains many treasures. Included in the other fine buildings to be seen in the village is the 17th-century manor house, a gracious red brick house built in the 18th-century and Step House, a wonderful example of half timbered black and white build. Of interest to is the local village inn, a glorious example of georgian architecture. There are several stone buildings and it is supposed that these were built of stone taken from Grinshill Hill.

Splendid isolation is thought to be the reason why the attractive village of Grinshill has remained almost untouched for so many years. It is almost as though progress has passed it by. Sadly, some would think this to be a curse but we think not, the unaltered charm of this lovely village is an undisputed blessing, it has a peace that is quite beyond compare.

There are some lovely walks in the surrounding open countryside and the nearby town of Shrewsbury offers excellent shopping facilities, restaurants, inns and public houses.
