SS Great Britain below waterline

The lower section of the rusty iron hull of Brunel's great steamship, seen from below the waterline. It is maintained in a controlled atmosphere in its dry dock below a glass roof with water flowing on top of it. The hull of the ship is so impregnated with salts that it has to be kept as dry as a desert. If even a small amount of water (such as is normally in air) gets in to the metal hull corrosion which has already done a lot of damage will start up again.
