a Picturesque Village in the county of Somerset

About Holford

Holford lies in a peaceful wooded valley at the foot of the lovely Quantock Hills crowning the landscape where the county of Somerset sweeps towards the coast.

The village is most noted for its peace, perfection and rich array of picturesque thatched cottages. It remains very much as it was when the poet Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy stayed here for a year (1797-8).

This a fine walking area, on a ramble amongst the lush wooded combes you are likely to come across gentle roe and red deer, butterflies, birds and a host of other wildlife species. On fine days from the higher reaches of the hills there are excellent views towards the coast and across the surrounding area.

Nearby, at Nether Stowey, a large prosperous village is the cottage where Coleridge lived between 1796 to 1799 and wrote the "Ancient Mariner", this is preserved by the National Trust.

Holford makes an attractive place to stay for anyone wishing to explore the Vale of Somerset, the Brendon Hills and the stunningly beautiful Exmoor National Park.
