a Seaside Town in the county of Somerset

About Watchet

Pretty harbour resort with long seafaring traditions and a fascinating history stretching back in the mist of time. Watchet lies close to St. Audrey's Bay amidst gentle Somerset scenery. It has a lively marina where you can watch a variety of colourful boats sail in and out of harbour or, if you wish join one of the organised sea trips on offer at the marina.

There are good beaches where fossils may be searched out - Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe, expressed his amazement at the diverse range of fossils found in these parts. The local museum houses a grand display of old fossils as well as recording the history of the town and telling of its past associations with the sea, the mineral railway and papermaking industry for which it was once famous.

Watchet offers an excellent variety of leisure activities, scenic walks in the quiet countryside or along the coast, browsing quaint shops in the town, exploring pretty villages and the glorious Quantock and Brendon Hills are just some of the things you may choose to do. A trip on the West Somerset Railway through pretty Blue Anchor Bay is hugely enjoyable, while a short distance away there are the delights of magical Dunster Castle. Dating from Norman times, the castle remained in the same family for over six centuries until it was given to the National Trust in 1976.

Being just off the edge of Exmoor, the region has no shortage of good holiday accommodation to suit all tastes and pockets. This ranges from superb caravan and camping parks to quality hotels for that quiet weekend away. There are pleasant country inns and public houses, restaurants, cafe's and seaside fish and chips! There are lots of local events including Watchet Carnival held in July.

Places to visit include: Exmoor National Park, Dunster Castle, 17th-century Watermill, Tropiquaria, Minehead, or take a sea fishing trip from the marina.
