I was born in Maltby March 1937 at 7 Millicent Square. From my early childhood I have been under the spell of Roche Abbey's history. It's simplistic beauty, the peace and tranquility of this once fine Abbey have been a part of me for over 60 years. I like many of my generation recall the weekends spent in and around Roche Abbey. It has for me enriched my life by the many happy memories I can recall.

The engraving on this stone is situated in ruins of Roche Abbey, Maltby South Yorkshire. On close inspection the engraving is in the form of the Right Hand. The two central fingers closed together, the thumb, index and little finger being spaced. One can only guess as to it's true purpose, but I summize the Stonemason scratched an outline around his right hand, and engraved it to fit his right hand.

I try to imagine the preparation, planning and the care displayed in creating Roche Abbey. Each task being the building of the Abbey through pure physical energy of those involved from the setting of the first stone to the last. One has to respect and admire that in the 12th Century with little in the type of tools and equipment this building was no mean feat. Even today it gives pleasure to those who care to look closely at the workmanship.
