It was from here that stone from a local quarry was transhipped for the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament at Westminster in the 1850s. 250,000 tons of stone, quarried in South Anston were transported by the canal to West Stockwith, and from there by barge via the Rivers Trent and Humber before embarking on the long sea voyage around the coast to the River Thames and London.
