About Burton upon Trent

An attractive multi-arched bridge spans the waters of the River Trent at Burton-upon-Trent where centuries ago Benedictine monks discovered the water to be ideal for brewing beer. The monastery no longer exists but Burton continues to be recognised for the qualities of its excellent ale.

The Bass Museum (now the Coors Centre) tells the story of the brewing industry from its early interception. Here visitors can see a micro brewery, Shire horses and historical drays, and in the brewing gallery there are displays of original brewing equipment from the 19th-century to the present day. For added interest there is a Robey Engine, one of a pair made in Lincolnshire in 1905 and a fascinating vehicle collection. There is all this and much more including an Edwardian Bar which offers the opportunity to play shove-ha-penny and dominoes. The Coors is a memorable experience with something for everyone, there is even a temporary exhibition area which displays changing exhibits. Your visit can be rounded off by a tasty meal and a glass (or two) in the Bar Restaurant, or weather permitting, take advantage of enjoying a picnic in a specially designed picnic area.

Burton-on-Trent is an attractive town, it has a pleasing market place surrounded by pleasant properties, some being timber-frame black and white. You only have to turn your eye's above the lively shop fronts to note the graceful architecture and age of many of the buildings. One of the town's most pleasant inns is the picturesque Abbey Inn with its handsome tall chimney pots, interesting brick work and decorative timbers.

The Church of Saint Modwen was built in 1726, this is dedicated to an Irish Princess who preached in the area in the 9th-century. This is a beautiful old church with many interesting church treasures - it is well worth seeing.

Other places of interest include Claymills Pumping Engines at Claymills, and nature lovers should visit Beehive Farm at nearby Roslington.
