About Horringer

Set in spacious, lovely countryside, a short distance from the favoured town of Bury St. Edmunds, in what is oft referred to as Breckland, is the quintessentially English village of Horringer. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book, so one is assured of it's long history.

A quiet wander in The Street rewards you with glimpses of properties that step right out of the pages of history. The Street is crammed with beautiful old buildings from as far back as the 15th-century and quite possibly beyond. Some are of thatch and have delightful gables and others are of a more imperious style. The Guildhall and The Old House are worthy of note, and Weavers Cottage shows jettying in the style typical of timber-frame properties. The lovely old church of St.Leonard has a font from the 13th-century - the church and Horringer Hall were both restored in the 14th-century.

Icknield House is an extravaganza of visual delight. It is a stunning Rotunda house commissioned by the 4th Earl of Bristol in 1794, a noted eccentric of his day, the Earl desired a lavish property in which to show his fabulous Art collection. The two wings of the house are connected by two curved corridors. Icknield, has magnificent state rooms that are sumptuously furnished with furniture from the 18th-century. There is a fine collection of silver and paintings in the house and the attractive parkland was originally laid out by Capability Brown. Horringer, is proud of it's long connection with the rare curiosity of Icknield House, now owned by the NT and open to the public.

Nearby Bury St. Edmunds has an abbey, a museum and several historic houses. Thetford Forest lies a short distance from Horringer, it is Britains largest Pine forest and is well worth a visit.
