About Kersey

Quintessentially English village of a style for which Suffolk is renowned. Winding streets full of exquisite properties, some dating back to Tudor times.

A prominent feature of this most English of villages is its beautiful 14th-century church dedicated to St.Mary. The church was richly embellished during the heady days of the medieval wool industry. It has a stunning tower which can be viewed from all around the village and the wooden panels in the south porch are a tribute to the 15th-century craftsmen who created them. Within it's serene interior, St.Mary's shows many treasures from the past. Lying amongst immaculate grass surrounding the church, there are a number of ancient gravestones. It is all well tended, typical of Suffolk and worthy of its landscape setting.

Shaded by trees, at the foot of a ford where ducks can sometimes be seen, is lovely River House. Its Elizabethan door tells us something of the age and splendour of this appealing property, it's idyllic setting is of an artists canvas. The 14th-century Bell Inn is a tourists joy. The Black and White timber-frame facade is enhanced by cascading flower filled hanging baskets. Inside, magnificent beams and a log fire set the tone, it is a very atmospheric place were your mind easily slips back to the past and a vision of handsome cavaliers, sitting at round tables, being served ale by pretty serving wenches, springs before your eye's.

The village is famous for having Suffolk's smallest school which can be found beside the church. This is a great vantage position, with good views all around, especially northwards towards the undulating countryside of the Brett Valley. As a matter of interest, the ford here is a tributary of the River Brett.

Kersey is a beautiful village and if you are visiting Suffolk, it is certainly a place not to be missed! Kersey is a short distance from Hadleigh and within easy driving distance of Lavenham and Chelsworth.
