About Nayland

The heady beauty of Suffolk has been the inspiration of artist's for centuries and the village of Nayland, in the hear of Constable country is no exception. It has a share of picturesque 15th and 16th-century properties, with its crowning glory being Alston Court in Church Street. This splendid house was built in 1450 and added to in 1524. It incorporates part of an Edward IV house and is notable for a spectacular nine light window from the 16th-century, a hooded doorway of 1700 and impressive carving in the great hall and dining room.

The village church features in John Constable's paintings, the world renowned artist was born near here and many of his local scenes remain easily identifiable as this is a landscape that has fortunately remained little altered by the passage of time.

Nearby Bures on the River Stour has delightful timbered buildings and a beautiful thatched chapel. At Stoke-by-Nayland, there is a 16th-century guildhall and maltings, and the 120ft church spire appears in one of Constable's paintings. The pretty River Stour and Sudbury are also worthy of a visit.
