About Snape

Snape is not simply unique for its beautiful location at the head of the River Alde, it is also unique as a village with an international reputation for music. The world-famous composer Benjamin Britten and his great friends tenor Peter Pears and Eric Crozier, founded the annual Aldeburgh Festival in 1948 which moved here in 1967. Its new location was to be a superb concert hall created from one of the town's former maltings, it is a stylish venue where outstanding musical performances continue to be enjoyed. Interestingly, this must be the only concert hall to be opened twice by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. Two years after the initial opening ceremony, the hall was ravaged by fire through an electrical fault, within twelve months it was rebuilt and Her Majesty graciously returned to re-open it.

Because of its idyllic location close to stunning coastal waters the village is a popular destination for members of the yachting fraternity. Snape is also a popular place for pleasant walks, you can easily stroll along the Sailors Path to Aldeburgh or follow any one of the way-marked walks and bridleways leading to bewitching forests which hold a wealth of wildlife. A walk round the Maltings beside the Alde reveals a fascinating collection of galleries where you can see interesting works of art, shops with up-market goods and restaurants with mouth-watering dishes.

Snape is an exciting place to be, it has an easy holiday atmosphere with an unhurried pace, and yet there is always something going on. You can be busy enthusiastically shopping, or be 'cool' on a boat or you can be happily relaxed ambling around any one of the regions precious wildlife trusts or RSBP reserves. For those wishing to do a little detective work about the history of the region there is a museum in Snape and Aldeburgh. Within easy driving distance you will find the 390th Bomb Group Museum which records some of the history of World War II.

All in all, this is a delightful place for all age groups, it makes a perfect destination for a lovely family weekend or a welcome break away from the bustle of every day life.
