The Doom Mural

On the west wall of the Church of St.Peter and St.Paul is it's famous wall mural. It was painted between 1170/1200 and as such is one of England's oldest surviving murals and considering it's age it is in a very good condition. It is thought it was whitewashed over sometime in the seventeenth century. In 1869 the then Rector halted decorations when colour was seen under the surface and the the mural was saved after being cleaned and preserved. In 1989 it was again cleaned and conserved to what we see today.

Oh what damage whitewash can cause. Glad to see it back in the open.
