Chatley Heath Semaphore Tower

Built in 1821 the tower was one of 15 to allow messages to be sent to and from Whitehall and the Naval dockyard at Portsmouth. A message sent in relay from tower to tower in semaphore ( from the mast on top where the flags would come out in their required sequence ) and a message could be sent from London to Portsmouth in about 15 minutes. The towers opperated until 1847 when telegraphy took over. This is the only remaining tower left.
