It is here that romantically Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton said their good byes before Nelson departed for the Battle of Trafalgar in the year 1805. The inn they stayed at was called the Hare and Hounds in the 19th-century but is now known as the Burford Bridge Hotel and stands in a lovely position close to the River Mole. Another important visitor to the town was Charles Dickens who stayed at the White Horse, a building of 15th-century origin.

A feature of this ancient Market town is the wonderful Bow fronted shop windows that face out from the clusters of buildings that line the narrow old streets. It is a pleasant town, surrounded by green hills and some of the finest countryside to be found anywhere. From the top of Leith Hill which climbs to a magnificent 950ft, 12 counties can be seen, it is the highest point in the south-east of England. The famous composer, Ralph Vaughan-Williams made his home at Leith Hill Place

The town relies heavily on agriculture and many farms are to be found interspersed in the countryside and villages that surround the town. It is a very pleasant place to visit, there is a nearby Golf course and good shopping facilities. Other places in the area are; the NT property of Polesden Lacy and Bocketts Farm Park.
