Not what you normally expect to see up your local High Street but this is Woking and here they proudly embrace the fact that the Martians first landed at nearby Horsell Common in H G Wells's book

Seeing as the Martians landed on Horsel Common just outside Woking, the town makes the most of it's connection to H.G.Wells classic novel.

This is Hawker Hunter T.7 XL623 and you may be surprised to learn it can be found in Woking town centre ! It is supported on a pole and positioned outside an enertainment called The Big Apple. When it was first set up ( 1998 I think ) it was painted- I have seen reference to it being black and other reports of it being in garish colours and the establishment was not the Big Apple but a family entertainments centre called Planets. Sculpture like this is not uncommon in Woking- more famous is the large Martian Walker ( images can be seen on POE )
