Waverley Abbey, Surrey

The ruins of Waverley Abbey near Farnham, Surrey. The ruins made an appearance in the Midsomer Murders episode, The Glitch. In 1128 French monks built Waverley Abbey, the first Cistercian monastery on English soil. For the next four hundred years the Abbey was home to 2,000 monks until its dissolution by Henry VIII, by which time only 13 monks remained and had an annual income of £174.
