Penshaw lies in open countryside between the urban sprawl of Sunderland and Washington. It is an attractive residential town for people escaping from the ever encroaching commercial towns and the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It is perhaps best known for the fine Penshaw Monument, a distinctive local landmark built in honour of the Ist Earl of Durham, who in 1844 became the first High Commissioner for Canada. The monument is built to resemble a roofless Doric temple, it stands on top of lofty Penshaw Hill which is now owned by the National Trust.

The Great North Walk

This picture was taken at Penshaw Monument during the 'Great North Walk'. Herrington Country Park has hosted the walk for the past two years, and a climb up Penshaw Monument was for those who wished to tackle the 10 mile walk. It will be at some other venue in the north east next year in June.
