A Bygone Era.

Early evening 'Bow Hauling' on the Coventry Canal at Atherstone Bottom lock. The smoke is from the stove in the 'Boatman's cabin' , there is no engine and it is called a 'Butty' and is pulled by another boat that has an engine ( Motor) On a wide canal the Motor and the Butty would be 'Breasted up' ( tied together side by side ) but on a narrow canal with single locks this is not possible. When the distance between the locks is small it is easier to pull the butty by hand rather than tow it with the 'motor'.
