About Borde Hill Garden

Borde Garden occupies a lovely landscape surrounding a splendid English mansion. It is an exceptionally beautiful garden, particularly rich in trees with what is without doubt the finest collection of champion trees in the country. The garden is noted throughout the world for its fine displays of shrubs and stunning trees, as well as for its beautiful plants and flowers.

It is a gracious garden, spaciously laid out in a presentation of rooms, each with its own atmosphere and rich colourings. The magical Bride's Pool is joyfully strewn with water lilies, its Mediterranean borders giving this picturesque spot a continental flavour. Of particular interest is the Azalea Ring, its hues ranging between delicate to vibrant colours. Visitors can expect to see exotic species and Chusan palm in the Round Dell, and in the Old Potting Shed there is a wonderful collection of herbs.

The gardens, occupying almost 160 acres, was initially established during the era of the great plant collectors and the historic house with its magnificent roofline of gables and tall chimneys acts as perfect foil to the gardens which apart from the aforementioned offers the beauty of a fragrant rose garden, a lovely rhododendron garden, a formal Italian garden and a peaceful garden appropriately called the Garden of Allah. You can see original Victorian greenhouses, one containing plants with an African theme. There are sweeping lawns to enjoy from strategically placed garden seats, and lovely garden statutory.

The glorious parkland offers a rich, natural habitation for birds, insects and wildlife, it is a true naturalists paradise with tranquil walks beneath broadleaved trees such as Oak, Ash, Chestnut and Conifers. In the spring the ground of Warren Wood and Stephanie's Glade is carpeted with gentle bluebells, their colour contrasting with the pale green leaves of the season, later, in autumn mists these same leaves crunch beneath your feet whilst others of red and gold fall in the ripple of a slight, prevailing wind. The parkland features a variety of leisure facilities, including course fishing for all ages.

For visitors, Borde Hill has lots of family attractions - most importantly it has an excellent restaurant in which to relax following your forage into the gardens. It also offers children a jolly time in the Pirates Adventure Playground, and there is a Gift Shop.

Borde Hill is proud to offer a number of seasonal events including special garden shows, plant sales, summer proms, outdoor theatre, and equestrian events. In the school holidays there are "themed" activities for children and one of the "highlights" of the calendar is the Vintage car rally.

Both the magnificent house and the garden have featured as a backdrop for film and television productions, and more recently Borde Hill has become a popular venue for weddings - what bride could possibly resist the allure of the Jeremy's Walled Garden for romantic photographic mementoes of an unforgettable day!

This is one of West Sussex's loveliest tourist attractions, it has stunning views across the stunning countryside of the High Weald is a "must see" for any visitor to the region.
