About Broad Hinton

Broad Hinton is found in the spacious countryside a few miles south-west of Swindon, close to the Ridgeway Path. It is a peaceful place with a gentle pace of life. At its heart is the lovely centuries old church of St. Peter ad Vincula where Saxon relics have been found. The earliest church records date from the 13th century and the church guide book names every incumbent, beginning with John Martyn, vicar in 1299 right up to the present day vicar Warren Sellars who arrived in 1992.

The buildings of the village are mostly set around its four main streets, these comprise a colourful variety of architectural styles, thatched, timber frame and brick, and its fringes Broad Hinton now has two pleasant, newly developed, residential areas. Not greatly changed since its earliest beginnings, the village with its lovely rural surroundings is starting to attract a new influx of people wishing to escape from crowded streets to the idyll of country life.

The village is best known for its magnificent white horse carved into a hillside nearby. It was created in 1838 by two local men. The 90ft square design is now a legendry local landmark spotted by motorists from miles away.

Broad Hinton has a couple of shops and a delightful village inn - The Crown.
