About Froxfield

There is a legend surrounding this attractive village, it tells of Wild Darrell, who in the 16th-century was the owner of Littlecote House. He is said to have murdered a new-born child by throwing it on to a fire. Wild Darrell had powerful friends and was able to escape gaol and the gallows, but he later met death by braking his neck when taking a jump at a stile. It is a strange tale and on nights when his ghost wanders the fields, you are supposed to be able hear the cry of wolves.

This is a pleasant village that comprises of a number of attractive brick and flint cottages, several with thickly thatched roofes and nearly all with delightful gardens. Interestingly, there is a large group of houses built for widows of the clergy by Sarah, Duchess of Somerset, in the year 1694. Near to these houses is a quiet chapel boardered by a lawn.

Littlecote House, is a stunning Tudor mansion set in glorious countryside just outside the village.

Froxfield is close to the interesting town of Hungerford and not far from the beautiful River Kennet.
