Ludgershall castle, formerly a hunting lodge of King John's. English Heritage, open access.

The 12th century castle viewed between the castle mound and earthwork ramparts. The condition of the castle owes nothing to enemy action, but to abandonment and use as a stone quarry for local builders.

The 12th Century Castle used primarily as a Royal Hunting Lodge, but it did take an active part in the 12th Century English civil war (Empress Maud sheltered at Ludgershall in 1141). The castle passed out of royal ownership and had collapsed by 1547.

12th century Royal hunting lodge now in the guardianship of English Heritage. During Royal ownership the land surrounding the village was turned over to parkland leaving insufficient land for farming, which caused the local economy to become based on trading
