About Elmley Castle

Elmley Castle is one of the most beautiful villages in England. The main street is wide and tree lined, peeping from behind the trees are well tended gardens backed by a memorable picture of enchanting Black and White cottages with creeper clad walls and thatched roofs.

Nothing now remains of the Norman stronghold of Elmley Castle but its name and its stones. The castle built in the 11th-century,
for many years was the seat of the Beauchamp family, was a ruin by 1316. It is believed that the castle was rebuilt in the 14th-century but by the 16th-century the castle fell once more into a state of decay, never to be repaired again.

In the year 1575 Queen Elizabeth 1st, visited Elmley Castle. She came on a visit to the Savage family and this visit is commemorated by an old inn sign. The local Parish Church of St. Mary is a treasure house of local history. In the well kept churchyard, amongst the tomb stones, are two 17th-century Sundials.

Elmley Castle lies beneath Bredon Hill. From early spring to late autumn the whole of the countryside in this peaceful area is ablaze with colour. There are the beautiful pastels of spring blossom, bright summer flowers, and in the autumn the creeper clad cottages are a riot of colour as once green leaves turn a vibrant shade of red. The surrounding meadow-land is full of frolicking sheep and contented cattle.

Of the nearby places to visit; The market town of Pershore, Evesham and Ledbury are all well worth visiting, they provide many interesting buildings, quaint old inns and good shopping facilities.
