Lion, Westminster Bridge

This is made from Coade Stone, an early artificial stone which is self-cleaning. The formula for it was was a trade secret and has been lost. The statue decorated the now demolished Lion Brewery in Lambeth. It was saved on the wishes of George VI.

Wonderful photo, John. Thanks for the history as well. I have a shot of this in my pics, but not nearly as good as this one.

A very good picture. The lion was made at the Coade Stone Manufactury which was sited in what is now Jubilee Gardens - near Hungerford Bridge not far from the London Eye.
