When Bess's 4th husband died she inherited a vast fortune and decided to build a bigger grander house, Hardwick Hall, and the old hall was abandoned and fell into ruin. The walls of the Grand reception room were dismantled and the stone was re-used to build some of the New Hardwick Hall. When the roof fell in, it was open to the elements and soon the floors and plaster work fell away leaving the shell.
