Medieval Sanctuary Handle on Felmersham Church Door Bedfordshire

This Sanctuary Handle on the door of Felmersham church in Bedfordshire is medieval in origin and dates back to the time when the Church offered sanctuary to those committing crimes. So long as such a person held on to the handle until the priest arrived at the church he or she was under the protection of the Church. However, sanctuary was not an easy option as it came with many rules and regulations.
