Portpatrick is on the extreme south-westerly tip of the Scottish mainland. The focal point of the village, which was founded on fishing, is the harbour. Portpatrick was once an important ferry port for passengers and freight between Ireland and Scotland and was once known as the Gretna Green for Ireland.

This picture was taken around 6am on a stormy morning. I saw the sunrising over the sea from my bedroom window and had to photograph it. St Marys Island is a place which I have always found magical from being a child

Cape Wrath Lighthouse

Cape Wrath Lighthouse was built by Robert Stevenson in 1828 at a cost of fourteen thousand pounds on the most north westerly tip of the British Mainland. It stands on cliffs 120 metres above the Atlantic Ocean. In 1795 an idea to improve navigation would help if a lighthouse was built at Cape Wrath. During the previous ten years off the coast of Durness there had been a number of shipwrecks and it was believed that if the rocks could be accurately navigated it would save hundreds of lives. The Lighthouse tower is twenty metres high, with eighty one steps to the top and is built of stone. The rest of the building is built of large blocks of granite. The lighthouse went automatic in February 1998.

Flamborough Headland has always been a dangerous place for shipping and there was a lighthouse long before the present one was built . The octagonal chalk tower is one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in England . It was built in 1669 by Sir John Clayton , who was given permission to build a number of lighthouses around the country by King Charles II . The 24 metre tower was designed to have brushwood or coal fire burning on the top .

The present lighthouse, designed by architect Samuel Wyatt, was built by John Matson of Bridlington in 1806 at a cost of £8,000. It was first lit on 1st December of that year.

The tide is in and the causeway to the island is covered. The lighthouse and adjacent keepers' cottages were built in 1898 by the John Miller company of Tynemouth, using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. It was built on the site of an 11th-century monastic chapel

The Lighthouse stands on St Catherines Point overlooking the English Channel, which is the Southern most part of the Isle of Wight. Sixty eight years ago on the 1st June 1943 three lighthouse keepers were killed by enemy action, when a bomb from a German aircraft fell on the engine room where they were taking shelter during an air raid.Today a 68 year old Union Jack still adorns one of the walls as a sign of rememberance and respect.
