The village is, as the name suggests, on a hill and a steep incline leads to the village green and by the side of this large expanse of grass are the mediaeval stocks, a relic of the village's ancient past. The stocks were a device for the punishment of certain criminal offenders, often for trivial infringements of the law, and were usually the fate of vagabonds and other petty offenders. A tiled canopy protects the wooden baulks of timber that were padlocked together to imprison the feet of miscreants for a set period and this suggests that justice at Witham was tempered with mercy for those incarcerated were protected from the elements. Stocks were last used in England in the middle of the 19th century.

This old red telephone box will form part of the reconstructed steam train railway station area. Once the steam trains are in operation, tourists from Cheltenham Racecourse Station will be able to travel directly to the beautiful Broadway village as they use to 50 years ago..

Pandora Inn- Mylor Bridge

This is a thatched inn dating from the 13th century and has survived flooding and in March 2011 a major fire. The inn was completely renovated and reopened in March 2012. As well as the usual assorted tables inside and in the dining area upstairs , there are tables outside at the waters edge- and then there is the floating pontoon. At right angles to the inn and projecting out into Carrick Roads just about where it becomes Restronguet Creek the pontoon has at least a dozen tables to have a nosh or a slurp in truley amazing suroundings( just try and time your visit for around high tide for best effect ) . You could even arrive by boat as there are mooring along the pontoon for boats- ( can you be done for drunk in charge of a boat? ). There is even a book called Pandora Inn based in the area , it is an espionage story based between the 1930s and the 1980s. On top of all that I have said so far, if you look over on the left hand side of the picture you can see a gold post box set in the wall- this is in honour of Ben Ainslie and his Gold Medal in one of sailing classes of the 2012 Olympics. I noted and was pleased to note that the plaque informing one of this honour is written in text and in braille.

Close to the village centre stands a traditional phone box, something that is only seen in rural locations. This is usually at the request of the local Parish Councils.

Iconic Red Telephone Box in Blisworth Village

This K6 telephone box, which has a little-known historic fact attached to it, is still in use today. Many years ago, when having a phone in the home was regarded as a luxury, this box was in fact one half of a 'party line', which meant that one or more subscribers who wanted to use the telephone at the same time had to sort it out between themselves as to whose call was the most important. In the case of Blisworth's K6, one of the parties connected to it was the local post mistress. If an emergency call was to be made the caller had to speak to the post mistress first. It was her responsibility to call whichever emergency service was required. This state of affairs continued until the 1970s when a new, small telephone exchange was built in the village.

Taken at the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum on 26th July 2011. This telephone box against the blue sky struck me as almost surreal and it begged me to press the Nikon's shutter. Mundane once, now these boxes are almost a British icon alongside Routemasters and post boxes. All red! Image best viewed at full size available.
