A picture of Wickenby

At the entrance to Wickenby airfield, Lincolnshire, standing on an old section of the eastern perimeter track, is the RAF Wickenby Memorial Stone in memory of 1,080 Wickenby-based airmen who died during WWII. The sculpture on the Memorial is that of Icarus. The base was opened in early 1943 as a purpose built bomber base and the home to 12 Squadron who were joined by 626 Squadron in November 1943. Over 300 operations were flown with 166 bombers lost, 160 of which were Lancasters. A further 30 aircraft were lost in operational crashes.
