The Great Tower and Cromwellian Stables, Greys Court

The Great Tower (14th century), at the left of the picture, was once part of more extensive fortifications at Greys Court. Sadly, the top of the tower is no longer accessible to visitors, which is a shame, because a climb up the wooden stairs rewarded the adventurer with a superb view of the estate. The Cromwellian Stable Block (17th century), at the right of the picture, dates from the English Civil War, and is now often used to house art exhibitions. The stables are reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a pot-boy from the time of the occupation of the building by Cromwell's troops.
