A picture of Elsdon
Winter's Gibbet (Steng Cross) on Steng Moss, near Elsdon, Northumberland.
A wooden replica of a severed head swings from the gibbet as a grim reminder of the fate of William Winter. He was executed in Newcastle in 1791 for the murder of an elderly shop keeper, Margaret Croziera. His body was left to rot and hang for months from the Steng Cross Gibbet
