Red Admiral (Vanessa Atalanta) Male, Freshly Emerged from its Chrysalis

Probably the most recognised and popular butterfly in Britain, although the Red Admiral is mainly a migrant from central Europe. A small percentage of the population are resident in the south of England, but most arrive in May & June and can be found anywhere in the British Isles, even Shetland and Orkney.
