Isle of Arran – Ailsa Craig

The foreground island is called Pladda and the island on the skyline is Ailsa Craig which is merely 240 acres in the outer Firth of Clyde, 10 miles west of mainland Scotland. Blue hone granite has long been quarried here to make curling stones. The now uninhabited island is formed from the volcanic plug of an extinct volcano.

Love this one. The sight of the island in the background rising up out of the ocean like that is immense. The photo of it takes my breath away, let alone how it must feel to see it in the flesh. Stunning.
