A Case of Eyes Bigger Than Tummy
"Thought that lens had IS and if i remember correctly that gives a 3 or 4 stop advantage? In which case you could probably get away with ISO 400 at widest aperture which is f5.6. I have to say I don't think I have used any of the 'presets' on my 500D mainly stick to aperture priority and juggle shutter and ISO, again rarely going over 800" - Dave John(1st February 2015)

A Case of Eyes Bigger Than Tummy
" Thanks for the comments Dave, I did think you would say something along those lines. Yes the 55-250 does have IS, and no did not have the monopod on the go- too much bobbing up and down and dashing about, and I am not talking about the robin !" - Vince Hawthorn(1st February 2015)

A Case of Eyes Bigger Than Tummy
"Stunning shot Vince. Personally I would have set Aperture priority and a fairly wide stop as you have in this case and probably 800 ISO which should still have given you a reasonable shutter speed. Does your lens have stabilization as that will help too. Also did you use your monopod? But yes at 3200 you will always quite noticeable noise, not that it intrudes too much on this image. The eyes and beak are very sharp which is spot on as it should be" - Dave John(1st February 2015)
