Interesting fence, Cumbria

Does anyone know anything about this style of fence, with painted metal slats curving inwards at the top? I had only seen it previously in Cheshire, where it is usually painted black or white. For me it is highly evocative of the county of my birth, where it seems to be approaching extinction.
