The Fallen Admiral - Saltwick Bay

The Fallen Admiral - Saltwick Bay

The twisted shipwreck of the fishing trawler 'Admiral von Tromp' lies on the rocky shoreline of Saltwick Bay on the north Yorkshire coast. Standing proud in the distance lies Black Nab Quarry, which will also be lost to the sea in the future. Quarrying led to the discovery of fossils, and the bay is now known as being a location for fossils. and in 1824, an almost complete skeleton of the extinct teleosaurid Steneosaurus bollensis (a type of crocodile) was discovered at the bay. The skeleton is now displayed at the Whitby Museum.

Gladiator

Gladiator

A replica of a 17th century Borghese Gladiator statue has been placed on a plinth at one of Yorkshire's most famous abbeys, Whitby Abbey. English Heritage has overseen the £80,000 project to re-cast the gladiator sculpture which historians believe once stood in front of the spectacular Banqueting House – now the abbey's visitor centre – built by a powerful Whitby landowner, Sir Hugh Cholmley II, in the 17th century. The QE2 at Whitby

The QE2 at Whitby

The QE2 will be delivered to Dubai World in November 2008, where she will cease her role as an ocean-going passenger vessel and be refurbished and adapted for her new home. From 2009, the vessel will be berthed at a specially-constructed pier at The Palm Jumeirah, the worlds largest man-made island, to create a luxury floating hotel, retail and entertainment destination.
