A picture of Grimsby The Dock Tower, Grimsby. Built to operate 10 pairs of lock gates, it now provides a low pressure water supply to the docks area. Built in 1851 of one million bricks made from clay found in the locality, it has a height of 309 feet and walls 4ft thick at the base. The design is based on the Palazzo Publico in Sienna, Italy. The tower is now grade one listed and open to the public on certain days (view N E Lincs web site for more infomation). I don't know of any other free standing tower in this country that is bigger, if there is, let me know. A picture of Grimsby The Ross Tiger birthed in Alexandra Dock, one of the few remaining middle distant fishing vessels still complete and can be viewed. At one time there were over 700 fishing vessels sailing from Grimsby, making it the biggest fishing port in the world at that time.
