Quacker Meeting House, Ackworth Built in 1747, the Foundling Hospital next door closed down in 1771 and lay empty for 6 years before a Quaker physician from London John Fothergill bought the buildings and set up a Quaker school there which was opened 1779. Ackworth School A branch of The London Foundling Hospital was founded here at Ackworth in 1841 where abandoned children were sent up from London and brought up in local cottages mainly on Seaton's Farm, in 1846 a decision was made to build a hospital at Ackworth and so 58 acres of land were bought from Farmer Seaton it was another 11 years before building begun in 1757 it opened in 1759.
