Obelisk at Colchester Castle

This Obelisk is at the Rear of the Castle where the Royalist Leaders, Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle were executed during the final stages of the English Civil War.

Colchester Castle, Essex

Colchester Castle was built on the Foundations of the earlier Roman Temple of Claudius (built around AD44). The Castle was built between 1069 and 1076. The Castle was ordered by William the Conqueror. In 1215 the Castle was besieged and eventually captured by King John following the altercation with rebellious nobles that eventually led to the Magna Carta.

After it ceased to be a Royal Castle it had various uses including being used as a County Prison. In 1645 the self styled Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins imprisoned suspected Witches. The Castle is now a Public Museum
