Dryad's Saddle

The picture shows a fungus named 'Dryad's Saddle' which was on the trunk of a Sycamore tree in the 'Foxcover Woods' at Herrington Country Park. The fungus is between 20-25 cms in width.

Grassed Amphetheatre

The Amphitheatre is a very simple construction with classical greek principals and fits in with Penshaw Monument which can be seen in the background. It is nonetheless very effective, both as a sun trap and feature in the normal use of the Park.

Site Lines

Sitelines (stone circle). On the central hill of the park is a stone circle with seven steel sighting boxes strung between the stones, one for each line of sight. The site lines are NEWBOTTLE CHURCH, WEST RAINTON CHURCH, DURHAM CATHEDRAL, GREAT LUMLEY CHURCH, PENSHAW MONUMENT, HASTINGS HILL, JOHNS ROCK.

Two cobs 'fight it out'.

The picture shows two mature cobs battling for territory in Herrington Country Park. Fortunately for one of them, my wife intervened and it made good it's escape.

John's Rock

Johns Rock was named after John Leathley, General Foreman of Crouch mining, who during the development of the park brought the 40 tonne rock from the bottom of the void, 70 metres below ground onto the top of the adjacent hill, with one of the heavy plant used to landscape the park.

A Battle For Territory

Sculptured Seat - Wind

Herrington Country Park has four sculptured seats designed and made by a group known as ‘Strata’ for Sunderland City Council, over a four year period. This seat ‘Wind’ was the first made in 2003.

Sculptured Seat - Sun.

Herrington Country Park has four sculptured seats designed and made by a group known as ‘Strata’ for Sunderland City Council over a four year period. The designs were based on the elements Wind, Rain, Snow and Sun. This seat ‘Sun’ was the fourth made in 2006.
