A picture of Elsdon Winter's Gibbet (Steng Cross) on Steng Moss, near Elsdon, Northumberland. A wooden replica of a severed head swings from the gibbet as a grim reminder of the fate of William Winter. He was executed in Newcastle in 1791 for the murder of an elderly shop keeper, Margaret Croziera.
