Milton Abbas in Dorset

A large lake occupies part of the estate at the lower end of the valley, which slopes down from the Abbey. Because this does not have public access it is a haven for wildlife and many species of waterfowl. It can however be viewed in places from the public footpath leading up to the Abbey.

The unique design of this cottage, which stands at the end of the quarter-mile walkway up to the abbey, suggests that it could have been a Lodge House on the original estate. Perhaps a gamekeeper's cottage?

Milton Abbas in Dorset

The abbey grounds are open to the public with the condition that people keep to the footpaths. The impressive landscaping, was originally the work of Capability Brown. Although part of them are now a golf course, they still have beautiful views.

Milton Abbey was set-up by King Athelstan in AD 938. The Benedictine Monastery was itself also founded in AD938. The adjoining Mansion House was built by the Earl of Dorchester in 1771 and is now a college.
