Newcastle upon Tyne R.V.I. A new hospital known as the Royal Victoria Infirmary was designed by William Lister Newcomb and Percy Adams and built on 10 acres of Town Moor given by the Corporation and Freemen of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne. Newcastle's Holy Jesus Hospital The Holy Jesus Hospital is now surrounded by roads, railway bridges and high modern buildings but still survives as a symbol of how the people of Newcastle have cared for each other since the middle ages. For 700 years the buildings on the site have been used to care for communities in the form of an Augustinian friary, The king’s manor, an early care home and a soup kitchen. Lemington Glassworks This shot was taken in 2005 and shows the defunct Lemington Glassworks when the bottle kiln was being saved from demolition by making it into a display area. Newcastle Black Gate Henry III added the Black Gate in Newcastle between 1247 and1250. It was approached via a drawbridge across a moat. A wooden bridge has replaced the drawbridge. The original gate had a portcullis, and the recesses where this fitted can still be seen. Newcastle Central Arcade The Central Arcade in Newcastle upon Tyne, is an elegant Edwardian shopping arcade built in 1906. It is contained within the Central Exchange building, which is a triangular building that was intended to be a corn exchange but became a subscription newsroom. In 1870 the Institution for Promoting the Fine Arts converted the news room into an art gallery, concert hall and theatre. This was replaced by a vaudeville theatre in 1897, but in 1901 the interior was destroyed by fire, after which the current Central Arcade was built within the walls of the original building. St. Mary's, Newcastle The tide is in and the causeway to the island is covered. The lighthouse and adjacent keepers' cottages were built in 1898 by the John Miller company of Tynemouth, using 645 blocks of stone and 750,000 bricks. Tyne with Ark Royal HMS Ark Royal visited Tyneside in February 2010. Ark Royal was a light aircraft carrier and former flagship of the Royal Navy. She was the third and final vessel of Invincible class. She was built by Swan Hunter on the River Tyne and launched by them in 1981. Newcastle upon Tyne The town wall was constructed during the 13th and 14th centuries to repel Scottish invaders. The walls were supplemented by an outer ditch, known as the King's Dyke. Leazes Terrace Leazes Terrace are Grade I listed buildings, built c1830 by Richard Grainger and designed by architect Thomas Oliver. The majority are in the ownership of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and used as Halls of Residence. However, several properties on the north east side remain in private ownership.
