Monument Bridge, Hull Beverley Gate gave access to the town of Hull through its walled defenses. The wall was built in the fourteenth century by Edward II who was granted permission to build a defensive stone wall around the town. It was rebuilt using brick between 1330 and 1410. In 1642 King Charles I traveled from York to Hull to seize the city for its considerable arms that had been left after the Scottish War. Sir John Hotham ordered the gates to be closed refusing the King entry to the town - an act that is thought to have triggered the English Civil War. Beverley Gate was demolished in 1776 to make way for the development of Queens Dock. (Now Queens Gardens) The gate was rediscovered during an excavation in the 80s, and also uncovered were the foundations of Monument Bridge, which went over the waterway connecting Princes Dock and Queens Dock (Now Queens Gardens.) The excavation site is a popular meeting place for skaters, goths and emo kids. Ghosts in the machine at Hull Fair Trails left by ascending riders. Hull Fair is one of Europe's largest travelling funfairs, which comes to Hull, for one week, from noon on Friday to midnight the following Saturday, encompassing the 11th of October each year. Unlike small local fairs, Hull Fair attracts rides, attractions and travellers from a wide variety of different regions from around the country. The fair is one of Hull's biggest traditions, as well as one of its oldest, having reached its 700th anniversary in 1993. Carrying on with such tradition, the fair is opened by the Lord Mayor of Hull on the opening evening, normally at 5 pm. It first opened from 9 to 23 March 1278.
