The Swale Crossing, near Iwade A249 Swale Crossing — As part of this project to upgrade the road link between the M2 and the port of Sheppey the new road bridge over the River Swale required the construction of 17 pairs of circular piers – up to 3 metres in diameter and rising to a maximum height of over 30 metres. As the piers were tapered, with the tops of all piers having a common bearing detail, Special Formwork manufactured the forms in modules to suit the different pier heights, thus offering the main contractor maximum re-use of the steel forms. The main contractor was Carillion, and BAM Nuttall were contractors for the piling foundations and construction of the pier.
