Penshaw Mounument Penshaw lies in open countryside between the urban sprawl of Sunderland and Washington. It is an attractive residential town for people escaping from the ever encroaching commercial towns and the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It is perhaps best known for the fine Penshaw Monument, a distinctive local landmark built in honour of the Ist Earl of Durham, who in 1844 became the first High Commissioner for Canada. The monument is built to resemble a roofless Doric temple, it stands on top of lofty Penshaw Hill which is now owned by the National Trust.
