Stanford on Avon Pioneering aviator and inventor Percy Pilcher (16/01/1867 - 02/08/1899) at the forefront of experimenting in human flight, died tragically when his unpowered glider crashed not long after take off from Stanford-on-Avon. A memorial plinth in recognition of this very early attempt and first aviation casualty, can be seen in a field not far from the village. It is also worthy of note that he had already assembled and ready for test, a motorised plane which, had he attained lift off would have preceded and stolen Orville and Wright's record.
