The River Leven, Backbarrow Cumbria A picture of The River Leven taken from the river bank of the small village of Backbarrow near Ulverston close to the southern tip of Lake Windermere. A very powerful river which in the eighteen hundreds powered many industries including Corn mills, Bobbin mills, Iron works, a Gunpowder mill, Woollen mill and numerous other smaller businesses. The building in the picture is now The Whitewater Hotel and Spa having once been a large mill. This picture appears in the following picture tours: |

This area was very industrial in the eighteen hundreds this included The Dolly Blue factory which people of a certain age may remember as the little blue bag which was added to a white wash to make the washing appear whiter.
