The Elizabethan mansion of Shaw House was built in 1581 by Newbury clothier Thomas Dolman. During the Civil War in 1644, the Royalists resolutely held Shaw House, and nearby Donnigton Castle, from the 17,000+ forces of the Paliamentarians and their cavalry commanded by Oliver Cromwell.

The former American temporary bridge over the Kennet and Avon Canal was replaced a few years ago. During WW 2, there were a lot of US Army personnel in the region, with the 101st Airborne Division quite prominent in the area. It's now known as the Millennium Bridge.
